In this blog, we will discuss the University of Pittsburgh MS-SLP program requirements. In order to prepare students for entry-level employment as SLPs, it is our mission to give them a strong foundation for success in a variety of educational, healthcare, and rehabilitation situations. To accomplish this, we encourage the growth of the following:

Admission Requirements

Elaborated below are the MS-SLP program requirements to get into University of Pittsburgh

  1. Every applicant must submit an application via CSDCAS. No application materials should be delivered directly to the department or school. Admission applications sent directly to the school will not be examined.
  2. Academic
    ● A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution is required.
    ● A minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a scale of 4.0) is necessary. A GPA of 3.5 or better is, nevertheless, strongly advised.
    ● Applicants for the bachelor degree with a CSD (or comparable) major will meet all prerequisite curriculum requirements. A grade of less than C- in a CSD major course is unacceptable and must be repeated.
    ● Applicants without a CSD (or comparable major) should have completed at least one 3-credit course in each of the following subject areas:
    > Anatomy of Hearing
    > Anatomy of Speech .
    > Language Development
    > Speech Science
    > Hearing Science
    > Transcription Phonetics
  3. ASHA Requirements
    You must fulfil the requirements set forth by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s Council for Clinical Certification in order to be qualified for clinical certification by the organisation. Before beginning the graduate programme, this includes passing at least one three-credit course in each of the following categories:

    ● Biological Sciences (Human Biology, Anatomy & Physiology)
    ● Physical Sciences (Physics, Chemistry)
    ● Behavioral Sciences (Sociology, Psychology)
    ● Statistics (not research design)
  4. GREs are no longer required for this degree program.
  5. Send three or more recommendation letters, at the very least.
    Two of the recommendations must be from professors in your major who taught at the collegiate level. Only electronic letters of recommendation will be accepted by CSDCAS.
  6. Submit certified transcripts from all colleges and universities attended to CSDCAS.
  7. Non-native English speakers must provide TOEFL or IELTS scores from the last 12 months (of the date of the application).
    The needed TOEFL internet-based test (IBT) score is 100. The minimum approved IELTS overall band score is 7.0.

About the course

Graduates of this program can work as speech-language pathologists in any clinical setting. There are excellent and varied educational opportunities provided by the University of Iowa’s MA degree in speech-language pathology. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s clinical certification standards must be satisfied by all graduates of the master’s program in speech-language pathology offered by the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.

The goal is to create professionals with the theoretical knowledge and cutting-edge clinical abilities necessary to provide clinical services. The MA program does not require a thesis, however there are chances for those students who are particularly interested in pursuing a research topic with a faculty mentor to engage in research.

Program Requirements

  1. A bachelor’s degree from a college or university in the United States that has received regional accreditation, or the equivalent degree from another nation as recognised by the Office of Admissions.
  2. A minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00, or foreign equivalent as determined by the Office of Admissions.
  3. It will be necessary for newly admitted graduate students to perform an English Proficiency Evaluation on campus prior to their first day of class if their TOEFL scores are less than 600 on the PBT or less than 100 on the IBT.
  4. A 7.0 overall IELTS score with no component below a 6.0. In addition, an on-campus English Proficiency Evaluation will be required of every IELTS test taker, regardless of score.
  5. Unofficial transcripts or academic documents that you have posted to your admissions profile. If you are accepted, you must have official transcripts before you may enroll.
  6. Applicants with GPAs of less than 3.4 in their undergraduate programmes, verbal GRE scores below the 40th percentile, quantitative GRE scores below the 30th percentile, or analytical writing GRE scores below 3.5 are not likely to be approved for admission to the MA-SLP programmes. The typical admitted candidate has a 3.80 GPA, an 80th percentile verbal GRE score, a 60th percentile quantitative GRE score, and an 80th percentile analytical writing GRE score.

Application requirements

● Select either the Master of Arts in Speech Pathology and Audiology or the AuD in Speech Pathology and Audiology when submitting and finishing your CSDCAS application – Liaison. Once your application has been submitted, you will receive an email with instructions on how to upload your supporting documents and have your recommenders submit their letters of recommendation. The CSDCAS Transcript Processing Center, PO Box 9113, Watertown, MA 02471, is where you must mail all transcripts from every institution you have ever attended.

●Additionally, you must pay the application cost by credit card and submit your online application to the Graduate College. Select “Clinical Doctorate in Audiology (AuD)” or “Master of Arts [thesis or non-thesis] in Speech Pathology and Audiology” as your degree target. You can decide to do a thesis or a non-thesis at any point during your programme of study. At this moment, kindly upload all unofficial transcripts. About the MS-SLP Purdue University course

A two-year, full-time programme leading to the M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology involves graduate-level courses with a focus on diagnosing and treating problems of speech, language, and swallowing across the lifetime. The program interweaves coursework and clinical experiences to help students gain the necessary information and abilities for successful evidence-based practice as speech-language pathologists.

Students participate in the department’s on-campus Communication Disorders Clinic throughout their first year of the programme to receive clinical experience.   5. TOEFL iBT – 100 (Minimum Scores: Writing 22, Speaking 28, Listening 22 and Reading 22)

    IELTS – An overall band score of 7.5 is required for admission with the following minimum section requirements:

● Diversity essay -Please submit a diversity essay of no more than 500 words describing your leadership, professional experience, volunteer work, or other significant involvement with racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, or educational communities that have historically been underrepresented in higher education. The essay should also explain how these experiences would foster a diversity of viewpoints, experiences, and ideas in the pursuit of research, scholarship, and creative excellence.

● For those whose first-language is not English, we require official test scores less than 2 years old from one of the following: TOEFL iBT or IELTS.

Prerequisite courses for the MS-SLP clinical degree

Students should have coursework that covers material from the following key areas:
● Normal anatomy & physiology for speech and hearing
● Acoustics or normal phonology
● Linguistics or normal language development
● Aural rehabilitation other than sign language
● Aearing disorders and hearing evaluation phonetics

Finish all the following scientific and statistics background courses before starting the graduate program for the MS-SLP program. ASHA certification requires completion of these courses. ● 1 course in biological science (focus on animal or human biology)
● 1 course in physical sciences (focus on chemistry or physics)
● 1 course in behavioral/social sciences (Soc., Psy., Rel., etc.)
● 1 course in statistics covering t-tests, analyses of variance, regression (correlation) and non-parametric statistics (e.g., chi-square). This should be a stand-alone course in statistics. Research methodology courses may not be used.
