Admission Requirements

  1. The Communication Sciences and Disorders Centralized Application Service (CSDCAS) is used by NU’s MS SLL programme for the submission and evaluation of applications. There are no extra forms or documents to fill out or submit as part of the application process. CSDCAS processes all credentials and application materials. Don’t send NU any application materials.
  2. Academic History: You will enter your coursework into the CSDCAS system in addition to providing your transcripts.
  3. Personal Essays: You will electronically send your answers to the personal essay questions to CSDCAS. You will be required to examine instructions for your personal writings that are relevant to each programme while submitting your application on CSDCAS.
  4. Extracurricular and Volunteer Experience: You will provide information about your extracurricular, volunteer, and/or employment activities in place of submitting a résumé. A few examples of these experiences include volunteering for student or community organisations, working to support one’s education, working in faculty labs or helping with faculty initiatives.   5. The GRE is not required for application for the MS SLL Program. GRE scores are not considered to admission committee members and are not utilized to evaluate applicants.

Students holding US and English Canadian transcripts, International and French Canadian transcripts, and Study Abroad/Overseas US Institution transcripts can all access relevant CSDCAS FAQs.
  7. Please be aware that three recommendation letters are needed. At least two of the letters should come from faculty members, it is strongly advised. Applicants with GPAs of less than 3.4 in their undergraduate programmes, verbal GRE scores below the 40th percentile, quantitative GRE scores below the 30th percentile, or analytical writing GRE scores below 3.5 are not likely to be approved for admission to the MA-SLP programmes. The typical admitted candidate has a 3.80 GPA, an 80th percentile verbal GRE score, a 60th percentile quantitative GRE score, and an 80th percentile analytical writing GRE score.

Application requirements

● Select either the Master of Arts in Speech Pathology and Audiology or the AuD in Speech Pathology and Audiology when submitting and finishing your CSDCAS application – Liaison. Once your application has been submitted, you will receive an email with instructions on how to upload your supporting documents and have your recommenders submit their letters of recommendation. The CSDCAS Transcript Processing Center, PO Box 9113, Watertown, MA 02471, is where you must mail all transcripts from every institution you have ever attended.

●Additionally, you must pay the application cost by credit card and submit your online application to the Graduate College. Select “Clinical Doctorate in Audiology (AuD)” or “Master of Arts [thesis or non-thesis] in Speech Pathology and Audiology” as your degree target. Tips on getting CEUs in ST

​To maintain your national certification as an SLP—those CCC-SLP letters after your name—you must do continuing education. You’ll need 30 hours every three years, starting the January after you’re awarded the CCC-SLP. For grad students, that means you can start taking and tracking your continuing education hours approximately one year after you get your masters degree, and then you’ll have three more years before you have to report those courses to ASHA. Yes, it sucks that CEUs you might do during your clinical fellowship year don’t count. Listed below are some tips on getting CEUs in ST (Speech Therapy)

1. Check for Eligibility

Are you eligible to receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association? To be eligible, you must meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • Member of the ASHA (includes Life Member and International affiliates)
  • ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) Holder.
  • Licensed to practise speech-language pathology (SLP) or audiology by a state or provincial regulatory agency.
  • Credentialed by a state regulatory agency to practice SLP or audiology.
  • Credentialed by a national regulatory agency to practice SLP or audiology.
  • Participating in a Clinical Fellowship under the supervision of someone with their ASHA CCC.

2. Find Approved Continuing Education Providers

4. Know About The Costs

The cost of a CEU is determined by a number of factors, including:

SLP Licensing Requirements in New York

Eligibility for licensure in New York

  1. You must have earned a graduate degree in speech-language pathology from the American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA)-accredited program, a New York State registered licensure qualifying institution, or its equivalent. Your educational program must result in a graduate degree from a college or university recognised by the Department.
  2. Fulfill 36 weeks of supervised experience in speech-language pathology by completing all conditions for the graduate degree.
  3. The supervised experience may be full- or part-time. Complete the supervised experience in speech-language pathology within four years with no more than two employers.

    ● Full-time: Consistent employment for at least 36 weeks, or a full school year, from September to June, with a minimum of 35 hours per week.

    ● Part-time: This is defined as having a minimum of 12 hours/week with one employer for a period of at least six months. Aggregate the part-time experience over no fewer than two days per week.
  4. A person who is qualified to supervise you at your place of employment must hold a New York State license. However, someone with the relevant American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Certificate of Clinical Competence (ASHA) may supervise the experience gained outside of your state or in an exempt location, like a public or private school.

Examination Requirements in New York

To fulfill the examination requirement and get licensed as a speech-language pathologist, you must pass the Specialty Area test of the Praxis Series, Praxis II, given by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) in your license area.
● Candidates for the Speech-Language Pathology licence must pass the Praxis Exam 5331. The minimum passing grade considered on a scale of 100 to 200 is 162.
● ETS must send test results directly. Send your scores to agency code R7747.
● ETS keeps scores on file for ten years. ASHA may verify your results if the testing service is no longer able to provide them.

Licensure by Endorsement

An applicant seeking endorsement in speech-language pathology or audiology from another state must have completed a programme in the field that included a practicum and a minimum of 60 semester hours in the field, or the equivalent, have met the exam requirements, have two years of professional experience under their belt after receiving their licence in another jurisdiction and within the six years prior to this application, and hold certification for an accredited program.

Temporary License

It’s optional to hold a limited license in speech-language pathology. For circumstances that demand direct invoicing to Medicare programs, a Limited License was developed. Not all configurations demand direct invoicing. Eligible individuals conducting clinical or academic practice under the supervision of a licensed speech-language pathologist can receive a limited license for the necessary time to meet the experience criteria for a professional license as a speech-language pathologist.

Continuing Education

● Personal essay – Explain in your personal essay how your life experiences have influenced your interest in speech or hearing, shaped your professional ambitions, and why you believe you will be a good fit for our program.

● Diversity essay -Please submit a diversity essay of no more than 500 words describing your leadership, professional experience, volunteer work, or other significant involvement with racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, or educational communities that have historically been underrepresented in higher education. The essay should also explain how these experiences would foster a diversity of viewpoints, experiences, and ideas in the pursuit of research, scholarship, and creative excellence.

● Transcripts – All applicants must upload copies of official transcripts.
● For those whose first-language is not English, we require official test scores less than 2 years old from one of the following: TOEFL iBT or IELTS.

Prerequisite courses for the MS-SLP clinical degree

Students should have coursework that covers material from the following key areas:
● Normal anatomy & physiology for speech and hearing
● Acoustics or normal phonology
● Linguistics or normal language development
● Aural rehabilitation other than sign language
● Aearing disorders and hearing evaluation phonetics

Finish all the following scientific and statistics background courses before starting the graduate program for the MS-SLP program. ASHA certification requires completion of these courses. Additionally, Students should get in touch with Vicki Black, the graduate programme secretary, as soon as possible if they have any issues about background courses.

● 1 course in biological science (focus on animal or human biology)
● 1 course in physical sciences (focus on chemistry or physics)
● 1 course in behavioral/social sciences (Soc., Psy., Rel., etc.)
● 1 course in statistics covering t-tests, analyses of variance, regression (correlation) and non-parametric statistics (e.g., chi-square). This should be a stand-alone course in statistics. Research methodology courses may not be used.
